What
is counselling?
In short, counselling can be described as a clinical programme
that will help people with problems to develop their skills
and lead a fruitful life. This is a personality development
programme through which people come to realize their shortcomings
by themselves and try to overcome them. It helps a person
to find out his place in the social environment and strengthens
his ability to take decisions. Counselling can also be described
as something that helps a person to attain mental perfection.
Why did
you decide to call this centre Sithmini?
A person's mind may get disoriented because of various
mental problems. Then he begins to hate social life. What
a person needs to behave as a good person in society is
peace of mind that helps him to live happily and achieve
his aims of life.
There
are many organizations and institutions in the country which
offer counselling services. So what is the need for another
counselling organization like this?
Several organizations have been offering counselling services
in Sri Lanka for a number of years now. But the Buddhist
philosophy contains a lot of information regarding counselling
which, I think, has not been adequately tapped by these
counselling services. This counselling advice which has
been available to the villagers through the temple in the
past has slowly been taken away from them. In the past if
there were family problems between the husband and the wife
they went to the temple to settle their differences. This
situation has changed very much now. Now it is as if the
Buddhist priest at the temple is too busy even to listen
to such problems. Therefore, we need to start a trend where
people revert to the temple for counselling and, for this
purpose, it is necessary to educate the chief incumbents
of temples and Buddhist priest regarding counselling skills.
In order to do so it is necessary that all organizations
engaged in counselling services in the country get together
and put in a concerted effort. We are ready to attempt this
task. We need to pool the resources for this task.
